The Sabato Morais Ledger Schoenberg Center for Electronic Text and Image - The University of Pennsylvania Library The Morais Ledger belonged to Sabato Morais (1823-1897), an Italian Jewish leader of Sephardi descent, Hebraist, poet, historian, lecturer and teacher. Morais received his rabbinical training in his native Livorno, Italy and served as the Minister of the Spanish and Portuguese Congregation Mikveh Israel in Philadelphia from 1851 until his death in November of 1897. He was the principal founder of the Jewish Theological Seminary, established in New York City in 1886, and was the first Jew to receive an honorary doctorate of laws from the University of Pennsylvania in 1887. The "Livornina" By this act of 10 June 1593, the Grand Duke of Tuscany invited foreign merchants and especially Jews, including Marranos from Spain, to settle in Livorno and Pisa and defining their rights and privileges. The promulgation of this edict lead directly to the development of the city as a major Italian port and as an important center of Italian Jewish life through several centuries.
