Centro Primo Levi and the Cahnman Foundation present the Open Seminars in Italian Jewish History honoring the memory of
Italian biologist and philantropist Gisella Levi.
With a three-day seminar held by Gadi Luzzatto Voghera (Boston University/University of Venice) Centro Primo Levi inaugurates a series
of semi-annual visiting scholarships aimed at creating an open forum for
academics, students and the general public dedicated to the discussion and
understanding of Italian Jewish history and culture.
A prominent scholar of 19th century European Jewry and modern anti-Semitism, Dr.
Luzzatto will work with traditional and multimedia presentations to explore
real life stories of 19th century men and women against the background of the
political and cultural change that dominated Italy in the wake of
unification.
A web-exhibit curated by the Center for Advanced Judaic Studies and the Penn
Libraries follows the 2008 seminars "Jewish
& Other Imperial Cultures in Late Antiquity". View the exhibition
What was Judaism like before modernity? And what was it like before Antiquity?
Those who have followed the extraordinary series of presentation co-sponsored
by CPL and the Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at University of Pennsylvania
last spring, will now be able to enjoy an online exhibition created by CAJS and
the Penn Library.
In this exhibit, scholars of the classical world grapple with the complex and multifarious material sources and received texts upon which are
understanding of the Roman empire and its minorities is built. In contrast to
earlier generations of studies of the rabbis and their world, this past year's
CAJS Fellows
focused on the imperial context of which Judaism was but one small piece. This
approach produced vigorous, new challenges to the kinds of evidence and
questions traditionally applied to the study of Judaism in Antiquity, an era of
seminal transformation in Jewish culture, law, society, art, and practice.

Marking the 60th Anniversary of Israel has given our public the pleasure to
learn about the small but extremely significant presence of Italian Jews in the
creation of the State. Marco Cavallarin
’s film premiere “Halutzim” and the recollection of Enzo Sereni’s vision and dilemmas made by Manuela Consoni have begun to shed light on a
fascinating story that we hope we can continue to unveil. Part of the program
at the Italian Consulate was featured by CUNY TV.
